PVD Coated Grades

PVD coated grades are based on solid substrates with the addition of thin layers of materials such as titanium nitride and titanium carbonitride through physical vapor deposition (PVD) in specialized furnaces. The thicknesses and combinations of these materials can be tailored to specific metalworking applications. PVD coatings have a smooth surface that generates less frictional heat, which lowers cutting forces and helps resist edge build-up that can result in chipping. Insert cutting edges are sharp or very lightly honed, which results in less chatter and finer surface finishes. PVD coated grades are best suited for machining steels, stainless steels, aluminum, and exotic materials.

Grade ISO Class Industry Class Description
AN2120 Roughing to Semi-Finishing P30-P40 M25-M35 C5 AN2120 is based on a very tough alloyed substrate with a thin PVD coating of TiN. Suitable for parting at low to medium cutting speeds in unfavorable conditions.

CVD Coated Grades

CVD coated grades start with solid substrates, many with cobalt-enriched surfaces to promote coating adhesion and enhance cutting characteristics. Coatings are applied through chemical vapor deposition (CVD) in specialized furnaces. Materials such as titanium carbide, titanium nitride, titanium carbonitride, and aluminum oxide are applied in various thicknesses and combinations to create a variety of grades tailored to specific metalworking applications. These grades offer cobalt-enriched substrates which produce cutting edges with increased edge strength and fracture resistance. CVD coated grades can be used for machining cast irons, steels, stainless steels, and exotic materials.

Grade ISO Class Industry Class Description
AN3010 Roughing to Semi-Finishing K10-K25 C2 AN3010 is based on a tough, alloyed substrate CVD coated with a TiCN and Al2O3 coating. This combination makes AN3010 the preferred grade for high speed operations on nodular cast irons.
AN4030 Roughing to Semi-Finishing P30-P40 M25-M35 C5 AN4030 has a very tough alloyed, cobalt-enriched substrate with a multi-layered TiN/TiC/TiCN/TiN coating. The preferred general purpose grade for parting and grooving at medium to high cutting speeds.
AN4045 Roughing, Interrupted Cuts P30-P45 M25-M40 C5 AN4045 is an extremely tough grade with a four layer coating of TiN, TiC, TiCN, and TiN. This is an excellent grade for machining at low cutting speeds and very high feed rates in severe interrupted cuts. Designed for heavy roughing of steels and stainless steels.

Uncoated Grades

Uncoated carbide grades are composed of tungsten carbide and a cobalt binder, with some grades having an addition of titanium carbide and/or tantalum carbide, to enhance critical properties. Uncoated grades are very versatile and can be used in almost any metalcutting application for cutting iron, steel, stainless steel, high-temperature alloys, non-ferrous metals, and even non-metallic materials such as plastics and composites. These grades are best-suited to applications with lower cutting speeds or for short jobs.

AN28 Roughing to Finishing K15-K30 C2 AN28 is an uncoated, alloyed substrate specifically designed for roughing to finishing operations on cast irons and non-ferrous materials. Alternate choice for nodular cast irons.
AN50 Roughing, Interrupted Cuts P30-P40 M25-M35 C5 AN50 is a very tough uncoated alloyed grade suitable for roughing operations on a wide variety of steels, including stainless. Performs well at low to medium cutting speeds with medium to high feed rates and handles severe interrupted cuts.
